Microsoft uses Internet cafés to deliver e-learning tool

MANILA, Philippines — Microsoft Philippines has partnered with local Internet café operator Netopia in offering free “digital literacy” courses, including the basics of some of its core products.

Microsoft is looking at Internet cafés as a venue for delivering basic IT education in emerging countries like the Philippines. Bill Gates, Microsoft’s founding chairman, discussed this latest campaign during a government leaders’ forum in Jakarta last week.

Prior to the Philippines, Microsoft also announced a similar partnership in Thailand.

Under the partnership, Microsoft’s i-Café E-Learning Portal (http://icafe.microsoftelearning.com/) will be made available in more than 160 Netopia Internet cafés nationwide. The portal carries 16 courses including basic training on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Microsoft Office applications.
