Aquino says he’ll throw book at DepEd execs over error-filled textbooks

MANILA, Philippines—Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino IIII said he would “throw the book” at officials of the Department of Education (DepEd) for failing to prevent error-riddled textbooks from being used in the country’s public schools.

In an interview with Inquirer editors and reporters on Tuesday night, Aquino said reforming the country’s education system would be a priority if he were elected.

DepEd to schools: Keep graduation rites austere, politics-free

Manila (23 February) — The Department of Education (DepEd), in Order No. 13, ordered all public and private schools to keep graduation rites for Batch 2010 politics-free.

It also ordered the schools to keep their graduation rites solemn yet simple and austere especially due to difficulties brought about by recent natural calamities.

DepEd 8th in list of honest government agencies

The Department of Education (DepEd) is ranked eighth among the Presidential Anti-Graft Commission’s list of honest government agencies.

The PAGC cited the education department in the Integrity Development Action Plan (IDAP) 2009 Awards. DepEd was cited for the first and second quarter of 2009.

“We are very happy to receive this recognition. This shows that DepEd’s thrust of implementing policies that conform to the ethical standard of public service is bearing fruit,” said Education Secretary Jesli A. Lapus.

DepEd to schools: Keep graduation rites austere, politics-free

It may be election season, but public and private schools have been ordered to keep graduation rites for Batch 2010 politics-free.

The Department of Education, in Order No. 13, also ordered the schools to keep their graduation rites solemn yet simple and austere.

“The graduating rites should be conducted in an appropriate solemn ceremony befitting the graduating students and their parents and shall not in any way be used as a venue for political forum,” DepEd Secretary Jesli Lapus said in the order.

DepEd acknowledges shortfall in teachers’ bonuses

MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Education announced on Friday that all of its teachers received their Christmas bonuses early this month albeit partially.

In a statement, DepEd said all of its 554,000 employees—most of them teachers—have received their P7,000 bonus, also referred to as the Productivity Enhancement Incentive. But it was short of the P10,000 Christmas bonus President Macapagal-Arroyo promised last year to all government employees.

DepEd assures replacement for stolen teachers’ bonus

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday assured that it will immediately replace the P4.9-million teachers’ bonus that was forcibly taken by robbers in Rizal province last December 29.

“We have generated funds to replace the P4.9 million productivity enhancement incentive of Rodriguez 1 and 2 of the Division of Rizal,” Paraluman Giron, DepEd Southern Tagalog director, said in a statement.

DepEd, DPWH team up to fast-track titling of public schools

MANILA, Dec. 20 (PNA) — The Department of Education has entered into an agreement with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to hasten the titling of school sites continuously occupied by public elementary and secondary schools nationwide but have yet to be registered and titled to DepEd.

Education Secretary Jesli Lapus and DPWH Secretary Victor Domingo signed recently an agreement to facilitate the prompt issuance of clearances required for the titling process. [Read more...]
